Introduction To Daniel Trebas

Some people might ask themselves why they should care about what happens to a former prisoner who is currently being illegally confined in one of California’s state mental hospitals. I know I can’t do anything that would force someone to care about me but, through my experiences and observations, I’ve reached a conclusion that anything anyone could ever do is based on an underlying need for survival. We are all just trying to survive the best we can and I think the need to survive is a good thing. However, because we make our strategies for survival out of formulas derived from our experiences (some of which may not be very good experiences) there may some strategies that are less effective than others and some can even cause damage to ourselves or others.

I am fully aware that I have done things in the past that no one should ever do. I cannot undo the damage I’ve done but I have done what it takes to prevent the same damage from ever happening again. I have picked apart and redefined old survival formulas in order to come up with new strategies. Even so, as a result of my past actions I have been imprisoned illegally at Atascadero State Hospital for over 8 years: with no due process or court order for the last six of those years. I know that the classic criminal mentality attempts to justify a crime by first devaluing the status of the victim. “Justifications” used against me have included exaggerations and lies related to alleged crimes and unfounded psychiatric diagnosis, evaluations and reports. Some authority figures may feel justified in committing violations and crimes against former criminals who are looked at as not being deserving of the same constitutional protections applied to other members of society. When authority figures have adopted a criminal mentality it’s a clear sign that survival formulas need to be redefined so that better and more successful strategies can be used. This is a survival need that applies to all of us.

I remember a story I once heard about someone who was in Nazi Germany and who, years later, said something like this: “When they came to take away the homeless people I didn’t make any protest about it. When they came to take the Gypsies I didn’t make any protest about that either. I was upset when they came to take away the Jewish people and the other groups of people they didn’t like, but I didn’t make any protest about it. Then, when they came to take me away I looked desperatly for others to help me make a protest – but there was none left.”

I don’t want to lessen the horror of what some people went through in Nazi Germany, but I think it is an important lesson for all of us to realize that we are all in this together, and it in all of our best interest to speak up and protest when our freedoms and rights are being chipped away at.

I wanted to say all of this stuff first because I believe that the authority figures who have been involved in the violations against me are ALSO operating from the same fundamentally-good urge to survive that we ALL share. I am definitely in disagreement about the formulas and strategies they have used against me. My hope is that we would all be able to help each other survive BETTER without condemning people who have strategies we disagree with. This is why I’m asking for your help.
